400 thought on “R.O.D. Read or Die 1

  1. This is my review of the whole Read or Die series I ve been trying to get into reading manga , and I really wanted to like Read or Die, I really did I almost didn t want to think about it so I could enjoy it However if I enjoyed it the review wouldn t be nearly as heartfelt The manga wants to be a lot of things a school story, a spy story, an X Men ish we have powers that no one understands preachfest, an action comedy, and a dash of wanting to appreciate great literature without referencing a [...]

  2. If there is one character that I was born to love, it is Yomiko Readman Also known as The Paper, Yomiko uses her ability to control paper and her rabid bibliomania to save the world from evil Nothing can be sexier I have read Read or Dream, watched Read or Dream The TV, and watched Read or Die, the movie Finally, I m reading the manga, and it s just wonderful fun Anything that extols the inherent virtues of books is worth a look.

  3. As a preface I have never rated a manga so low.Silly and not in that cute way , horrible translations or bad writing, not sure which, and a homo eroticism that could ve been good had the writing not gotten in the way.Less about awesome Paper skills and about silly fan girl s performing weird fan boy services.

  4. many people love books but few are loved by books I normally don t do manga except back when i was typing word processing or whatever the hell you call it up our teen book reviews a few years back and i had to leaf few a couple of them to try and figure out what a couple of the kids were trying to say but that is an entirely other subject , but i heard about this series and thought i would give it a shot.Apparently the R.O.D Read or Die now there s the ultimate ultimatum for you started out as a [...]

  5. Hideyuki Kurata, Read or Die vol 1 Mr Woo s Woes ViZ, 2000 It s a no brainer that a manga series called Read or Die changed after four volumes to Read or Dream would catch the eye of a voracious reader like yours truly It proved to be kind of hard to track down, however, and I ve finally gotten my hands on the first volume of the series almost three years after I first heard about it And honestly, I m not entirely sure what to say about it There are so many things about this first volume that I [...]

  6. Yomiko Readman is a heroine like no other Working for a top secret organization, she uses her abilities to manipulate paper to astonishing effect She also happens to be a be spectacled bibliophile with a mania for secondhand bookstores How could a reader like myself resist Yomiko employs all five of her senses to appraise books It s almost embarrassing to watch as she drools over a choice tome, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase book LOVER In spite of the fact that she s a bookworm, this m [...]

  7. A classmate of mine is writing a paper on libraries and librarians in pop culture She mentioned this series to me, so I figured I d check it out I wasn t terribly impressed with this manga version The series is extremely action oriented, and translating action into excessive onomatopoeia just doesn t do it for me I was actually starting to hate the book when I decided to watch the second anime series based on R.O.D the TV wow Totally impressed So then I watched the original Also good So then I d [...]

  8. 11 February 2013Rating 1 2I was so excited when I picked this up and read the synopsis The premise of R.O.D Read or Die 1 sounds like a match made in heaven for any fellow bibliophile and manga fanatic Unfortunately, the shallow writing makes this story come off as a bibliomaniac s crazy wet dream instead The lead character, Yomiko Readman aka The Paper, is the saving grace of this volume Anyone who loves books will be able to relate to her and find her endearing She absolutely kicked ass with h [...]

  9. Meet Yomiko Readman, a young woman of mixed Japanese British ancestry, who is the most intense bibliophile you ll ever see Her intense relationship with literature goes to the point where she seems to nearly have an orgasm from being allowed to authenticate a rare first edition tome Good thing Yomiko works for a prestigious organization The British Library But behind the unassuming exterior of both Miss Readman and The British Library are some rather special facts the Library is a secret organiz [...]

  10. I LOVED it The main character is not a librarian, however she loves books so much that she s almost a slave to them When she finds an extremely rare book, she goes into throes of passion She uses her five senses even taste in order to become fully aware of the book Somehow the books and paper can almost sense her utter dependency upon books and they allow her to manipulate paper in order to defend herself and in some cases kill A government agency finds out about her abilities and puts her to wo [...]

  11. Usually, I m not a big manga fan, or anime for that matter I saw the movie for this one recently and liked it, so I thought I d give the book a try I liked the story overall, I suppose When reading graphic novels I prefer the majority of the story to be seen in the art of the panels This story was very wordy for a comic and didn t have a very good flow Some of the speech bubbles were huge It also did the whole lets talk monologue, for extended periods before getting to the point Also, some of th [...]

  13. Yumiko Readman is The Paper , a bibliophile who can make paper do anything she likes she loves it and it loves her She works for the British Library to retrieve rare books In the first volume, she also meets one of her favorite novelists, Nanene Sumiregawa, who is endangered by a fan It is up to Yumiko to protect her R.O.D Read or Die has an interesting concept people who love something so intensely that they control it , but the story isn t all that interesting There s a lot of sexual tension a [...]

  14. I saw the movie years ago and thought the character premise was fun a super book geek with the power to manipulate paper as a weapon the way we usually sees anime manga villains use their hair The manga, however, is a total flop Hypersexualization of all female characters including 13 year olds , inflataboobs everywhere, lots of rape undertones, seems like it s trying very hard to be hentai without showing any outright nudity Also excessive silliness at times how does this woman who must bleed R [...]

  15. Volume 1 of the manga by Hieyuki Kurata and Shutaro Yamada takes what was a sweetly insanely heroine in the anime movie and makes her an utter maniac Everyone is constantly declaiming in just about all caps And there are tons of gratuitious giant breasts and panty shots This volume even has a character mention Yomiko s large breasts in case you missed em In the movie Miss Deep wore leather dominatrix wear but, weirdly enough, it wasn t really salacious, just strange Here, the attitude seems to b [...]

  16. I had heard about this somewhere and I love this whole idea My son picked up the book on my table and read a bit and said, oh, this is for you.It is a cool manga and I also have the anime to watch But I m a little confused about the pieces of the series, so I hope I can sort it out helped.Anyone who loves books and likes manga would love this I am only a very lately purveyor of manga in fact, I think this is the first one I ve ever read I have watched some anime but not much So even if you don t [...]

  17. This is a fun Manga I ve seen parts of two different R.O.D anime, and it s nice to know that I ll be able to read this entire series All three outlets have been different 2 anime and 1 manga and I have enjoyed all three different styles How bad can a Manga be if it tells us that some people can love paper so much that the paper can love them back How bad can a Manga be when we discover that some people love paper so much that they can use it to defend themselves All you have to do is shape the p [...]

  18. Date read is a guess A very weak sister to the anime series Art is hard to follow and the story doesn t help much Agent Paper must save a writer from an obsessed fan, ala Misery A lot of gratuitous sexual allusions about and I m not overly impressed with the use of her paper powers in this volume I ll read volume 2 when I get around to it Library, 06 06 Trebby s Take Not worth your time unless you re dying for paper tales.

  19. I am a huge fan of the R O D Read or Die OVA, and I was quick to pick up the four volumes of this story when I found it at my local library Yomiko Readman is what all bibliophile dream of being Her love of books has bone beyond the page and she is able to connect with the story, and the author in ways we can only imagine Besides that, she can control paper and make it become any shape she desires A must read for book lovers lockheed40books

  20. I love almost everything about Yomiko her character, her relationship with Nenene, her glasses I also loved this line a bibliophile is an alchemist of the soul However, I am in love with the art of Read or Dream than I am with the art of Read or Die But, I do have to mention the amazing Yomiko cosplay

  21. Read or Die is a great manga that keeps you interested and wanting I re read it I read it years ago and still think that it along with the other volumes are a great read The story follows Yomiko Readman a secret agent of the Royal British Library s Division of Special Operations She is known as Agent Paper Yomiko has a very unique ability She has the ability to control paper.

  22. I enjoyed the anime movie better This version feels a bit watered down and the story characters weren t as interesting as the anime.I ll probably try , as I love the idea behind it and hope it ll find it s footing and tell a better story as it goes.Plus, as a book addict, how can I resist a team of secret government librarians fighting evil

  23. The art confused me a bit in this and the next volume things seemed to happen in one panel without text and suddenly in the next everything was different I enjoyed the premise, but there seemed to be random bits stuck in along with jumps in time plot.

  24. I like to think that I know what to look for in a good manga Well, this one was drawn in a new way I had trouble determining who said what I also feel that for some of the book, transition was needed between frames The premise was nice though.

  25. This manga was the basis for the movie R.O.D In it we meet agent paper, a true bibliophile who s love for books borders on the scary This book is comparable to Misery, with a villian kidnapping Yumiko s favorite author so that he can help her write better.

  26. An interesting start to the manga series that spawned one of my favorte OVA titles, and later the TV series However, the over the top humor didn t mesh well with the serious nature of the events for me and the off model art of this first volume was highly off putting.

  27. I didn t think there was any point into reading the manga since I d already seen the OAV and the tv series, but the manga actually tells a very different story Worth reading if you re a fan of the series.

  28. I m not sure if I m biased from watching the OVA or the TV series first but I really wasn t all that happy with the manga It s okay It read like shonen manga rather than seinen It has potential and I love the concept of Yomiko Reedman but not sure if I like how its playing out.
